Jackson Leef ‘17 Carries on Family Hockey Legacy

Jackson Leef ’17 signed to play professional hockey for the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL. This accomplishment fulfills a dream of playing hockey in his hometown.

Leef is proudly carrying on his father’s legacy. Leef’s father, Ron Leef, played seven seasons as a leading scorer for the Fort Wayne Komets. Ron is also a member of the Komets Hall of Fame. Jackson cited his father as the greatest influence on his career.

Prior to joining the Owl family, Leef played junior hockey in the NAHL for the Texas Tornadoes. Then he was recruited to play hockey for Westfield State.

He fondly remembers his time at Westfield. “The relationships that were created, and the people were awesome. I made some of my best friends at Westfield State. I had great relationships with my professors and got close to a number of them as well, which was a different experience than I had had in juniors, and it was a cool experience,” said Leef.

As a senior, Leef scored 19 goals with 21 assists, earning the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the year award. Throughout his Owl career, he scored over 100 points.
