Phanessa Fisher, affectionately called “Nessa” or “Phanny Mae” by her peers, was a student and an athlete at Westfield State. She passed on March 19, 2002, after battling cancer. Her family started the Phanessa Fisher Memorial Scholarship fund and each year the “Phanny Open” is played in August to raise money.
Two, $2,000 scholarships are given each year and are awarded to an applicant who is a female town resident attending Wachusett Regional High School or Montachusett Vocational Regional Technical School, planning to attend any higher education school the fall after graduating, and is either a Girl Scout, art student or planning to major in art in college, have a job or be a current member of their church involved in any youth programs.
Fisher's Legacy lives on in both the support of the current students and in the athletics department. While Fisher’s softball jersey was never officially retired, it has not been assigned to another player since she wore it.
