Westfield State Alum Taryn Canfield '18, G'21, was featured on the NPR Fabulous 413 podcast for starting a food pantry at her school!

Westfield State alumna Taryn Canfield, who holds both a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Counseling from Westfield State, was recently featured on NPR's Fabulous 413. This daily afternoon radio show highlights the life and culture of Western Massachusetts, showcasing a variety of music, news, and local stories.

Canfield is well-known in the Westfield State psychology department, particularly for her work-study position in the psychology department, which eventually transitioned into a graduate assistantship during her master's program. During her radio segment, she discussed the food pantry she established at the high school where she works. This pantry is the first in Franklin County and reflects her dedication to her students. Reflecting ideas that Westfield State also shares with our food pantry, a staple to student support here on campus!

In her interview, Canfield shared how the idea for the food pantry originated and how it operates within the school. We won't spoil the details, but she expressed her vision for its future: "I would like to expand; we have a small space right now. I want to get the word out; we are just starting. I hope this becomes well-known in the community and is seen as a truly supportive initiative. At the end of the day, kids cannot learn if they are hungry." With future ideas for a "self-care cubby, supporting personal hygiene needs for students as well.

We are so proud of you, Taryn! If you'd like to listen to her incredible segment, please check out the link here
