Westfield State Alumni Lawrence Akers '18 Awarded the Age of Excellence Award

Westfield State alumni Lawrence Akers '18 has been nominated by Glenmeadow, a life-planning community in Longmeadow, MA, as a recipient of the Age of Excellence award. Akers will be one of the seven inaugural winners of this award, which aims to honor those over sixty for redefining life at 60 and beyond, showing life does not have to slow as you age. Akers will receive his award on September 4th.

Akers, who graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice(?), was chosen for several reasons. In 2023, for example, he rose to deputy chief, where he demonstrated his commitment to improving public safety in the Springfield area. Alongside treating everyone he meets with kindness and humility, he has also shown an unwavering focus on community service, earning him accolades such as the Frank Murphy Medal of Valor. This medal honors individuals who risk their own lives to save others. During the 2022 Ride to Remember, Akers saved a fellow officer's life, showcasing what it means to do good beyond the badge, as Glenmeadow aptly named him.
