Westfield State Alumnus Tom Stewart '88 has earned a national award for Excellence

Westfield State alumnus Tom Stewart '88 currently serves as the athletic director at Holyoke Community College. He has been named the 2024 recipient of the George E. Killian Award of Excellence, the highest honor awarded annually by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). This award recognizes individuals who embody the ideals of voluntarism, achievement, service, leadership, and Excellence, something Stewart reflects quite well. With 550 schools recognized by the NJCAA, it is the most significant athletic association for two-year colleges, such as HCC, where Stewart currently works. Stewart was the first person from any New England college to be the recipient of the George E. Killian Award since the awards began 18 years ago.

At Westfield State, Stewart was a dedicated men's cross country and track and field team member for four years. He eventually won the Westfield State Invitational and was recognized as an all-New England runner in the steeplechase during his sophomore year. These achievements earned him a place in Westfield State University's Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduating, Stewart returned to Westfield State, where he worked for seven years as the Student Activities administrator and director of intramurals. During his time back, he also coached cross country as well.

Congratulations on the award, Tom Stewart! We are so proud of you!
